Hot Rod Classics Add Portable Defibrillator as Safety Measure

DARTMOUTH, NS – The Hot Rod Classics Vintage Race Car Series has added a portable defibrillator to its mobile headquarters that travels to each of the series events. The addition is a move aimed at helping increase the likelihood of a positive outcome should one of its members experience cardiac arrest during an event.

The series is mindful of the aging demographic it appeals to but also recognizes cardiac arrest can happen at any age. Studies show chances for survival of a cardiac event increase from four to 74 percent when the patient can be treated within 3-5 minutes with an automated external defibrillator (AED).

In fact, the need for an AED was driven home when a series member suffered cardiac arrest within a couple of days of an event. Thankfully, they had a good outcome but the “what if’s” became reality. The AED will supplement existing safety measures at the facilities it visits, often in remote locations.

While they have sophisticated technology, AEDs are inherently easy-to-use. They automatically analyze heart rhythm and if necessary, deliver an electrical shock (defibrillation) to help the heart re-establish an effective rhythm; this can prove to be lifesaving while waiting for paramedics to arrive.

The acquisition comes at a time when sports authorities globally are encouraging clubs, teams, and recreational facilities to have an AED as part of their first-aid equipment. The addition of the AED for the Hot Rod Classics was made possible with help from one of its longtime sponsors, Steele Volkswagen.
