NHRA drag racing legend Don Prudhomme was among the group driving the buggies with Stewart on Sunday, along with Jeff Gordon, Ray Evernham, Greg Biffle and Rusty Wallace. Prudhomme did an in-depth interview Thursday with NBC Sports setting the record straight on the details of the accident. In a nutshell he said Stewart got separated from the group and at some point while he was alone got airborne; when the buggy landed it bottomed out and Stewart’s back took the shock.  He managed to get out of the vehicle but when the group finally found him, after being pointed in his direction by another person (not in their group) Stewart was on his back on the sand. Evernham took charge and they got Stewart to the ranch where they were staying and called the medics who had him airlifted to a nearby hospital. read the complete NBC article here

This marks the third season in the last four years that Stewart has missed races during the NASCAR Sprint Cup series season. In 2013 he was sidelined for 1/3 of the season with a broken leg, then in 2014 he missed three races after a sprint car accident that caused another driver’s death, and now he’ll be out for an unknown number of races in 2016, the final season of his NASCAR career.
