Robert Yates, a respected legendary member of the NASCAR community, passed away Monday after a battle with liver cancer. He was 74.

His death was announced on social media by his son Doug Yates, co-owner of Roush Yates Engines.

Robert Yates was a master engine builder and longtime NASCAR team owner. In May he was selected as a member of the NASCAR Hall of Fame Class of 2018. He was recently honoured when Stewart-Haas Racing ran a car at Darlington replicating one that brought Robert Yates much success.

As an engine builder, Robert Yates collected 77 wins in NASCAR’s premier series. As team owner of Robert Yates Racing he amassed 57 more victories and a championship in 1999 with fellow NASCAR Hall of Fame inductee Dale Jarrett.

Jarrett was among those in the NASCAR community who reacted to Robert Yates death in an outpouring of support: “Very sad to hear the news about Robert Yates. Please keep the entire family in your thoughts and prayers. A great man.”
