Check out the crowd at Midway Speedway near Sydney (NS) in 1967! And no wonder - every division - 6 cylinder pickups, flatheads, overhead valve V8's - ran the same feature. Midway was a 1/4-mile dirt oval located just outside Sydney on Route 4, in operation from 1966 to 1969. Thanks to Ken MacIsaac for sharing this with us.

The cover of a 1954 program from Sackville Speedway, an early 50s 1/5-mile dirt oval in Lower Sackville, Nova Scotia. The cover features Frank McMahon - the 1954 Mid-Season Championship Race Winner, and 1953 "High Point Driver." This was the Drag City Raceway complex in Lower Sackville, Nova Scotia in 1969. The facility boasted a 1/4-mile drag strip (to the left) and a 1/3-mile paved oval, operating as Drag City 1968 and 1969 - then as Halifax Dartmouth International Speedway from 1970 to 1973. Most of the land has since been developed as a residential subdivision.

It's 1947, it's Red Byron - the winner of the first race ever held at Martinsville Speedway in Virginia - the site of this weekends NASCAR races, and the only track that has been on NASCAR's schedule every year since they started in 1948 - when Byron won the series first championship...More Martinsville history [here]...



It's John Chisholm at Riverside Speedway in 1976 on a night he won all three events at the track he had built in 1969 - in a 1972 Chevelle built by NASCAR legend Bobby Allison. Chisholm has since handed the keys to the family racecars to his son Donald and in 2006 rebuilt the Speedway to make it one of Canada's premiere short tracks


The late Dale Earnhardt (right) won his first-ever NASCAR Cup race when he took the 1979 Southeastern 500 at Bristol International Raceway - the site for this Sunday's NASCAR Sprint Cup and Nationwide Series races. Bristol has been on the NASCAR schedule for 47 of NASCAR's 60 years. [more here]


NASCAR pioneer Glenn 'Fireball' Roberts hugs Miss Georgia following his win on July 31, 1960 in the first NASCAR Sprint Cup race at the brand new Atlanta International Raceway. The following year, the track's race date was moved to March; and remains there 47 years later - as the series competes at the speedway this weekend. Roberts died less than four years later, at just 35, as a result of injuries sustained in a crash at Lowe's Motor Speedway; he was named one of NASCAR's 50 Greatest Driver's in 1998..


It's Riverside Speedway in 1977 - and the starting lineup for the NASCAR Busch North Series race held at the venue - in front of a packed house! This very likely was one of those events at Riverside where announcer Jerry Lawrence urged the fans to squeeze a little closer to their neighbors to make room for more fans...The race was an open comp and featured such short track legends as Dave Dion, Dick McCabe, Don Biederman and Junior Hanley. It's a three-wide finish of the first Daytona 500 in 1959; which took three days to decide the winner - eventually named as Lee Petty...


February 8, 1987 saw the 9th running of the Busch Clash - the event now known as the Budweiser Shootout. We were fortunate enough to be there to get this promotional poster showing the starting lineup (from top left): Bill Elliott (starting 14th Saturday night), Darrell Waltrip (retired), Terry Labonte (retired), Tim Richmond (deceased), Ricky Rudd (retired), Alan Kulwicki (deceased), Benny Parsons (deceased), Cale Yarborough (retired), Geoff Bodine (retired), Dale Earnhardt (deceased), and Harry Gant (retired).


It's the No. 62 of the late Paul Lewis at Brookside Speedway (circa late 60s). The picture was submitted by CTW.com reader Brian Speight whose uncle, Roger Ferguson, was the track announcer in the tower at the top of the photo. Brookside Speedway was a 1/4-mile paved oval near Fredericton (NB); it closed in 1975.


It's the early 70's and it's Shubenacadie's Frank Fraser (left) along with crew members Jim Davie (middle) and Mike Pelrine (right). They ran a sportsman car that year, competing at Atlantic Speedway, Riverside Speedway and Drag City...Thanks to Mike Pelrine for sharing this with us...


It's Adelard Cormier's car at Brookside Speedway (NB) in the late 60s. Cormier was a fixture on Maritime tracks in the 60s and 70s - and his achievements were recently recognized when he was inducted in the Maritime Motorsports Hall of Fame as a member of the class of 2007...(Picture contributed by Brian Speight)


It's a page from a 1967 souvenir program at Sea-Breeze Raceway (Lawrencetown, NS) featuring Ron Parker on the left side and the previous meet results on the right side. Dean MacInnis sent us this Flashback Foto of himself in 1989 at MacDonald Speedway - which was located in Port Hood (NS). MacInnis has since made some ARCA/ReMax Series starts, spending the 07 season commuting between Kansas City and the Maritimes where he ran his late model in several events...

It's the unmistakable landscape of Riverside Speedway near Antigonish "back in the day" - the early days - in 1975. Leading the pack is guest driver Earl Ross on the inside and Shubenacadie's Frank Fraser on the outside. Ross, from Ontario, made the trip to Riverside on the heels of winning a NASCAR Winston Cup race at Martinsville and the series Rookie of the Year title in 1974 - the only Canadian to win the rookie title in NASCAR's top series. Second on the inside is Rollie MacDonald in the Petty Kit car he was running at the time; second on the outside is Jim Hallahan in Don Alexander's Mustang...Thanks to CTW.com reader Alan Hogg for the picture.


It's 1978 at Bud's Speedway in Sydney (NS)...The street stocks were rounding turns three and four heading for the green flag! Bud's first opened in '75, became Sydney Speedway for a few years in the 80s and then in 1990 became what we now know as Island Speedway...Many thanks to Ken MacIsaac for sharing this Flashback Foto with us...

Seabreeze Raceway, September 1968 - The popular 1/4-mile oval was located in Lawrencetown, just outside Dartmouth (NS). It operated from 1966-1969 as a dirt oval then paved in 1970 and 1971...Thanks to Laurie Roué, second on the outside and eventual winner of this race, for the photo...


It's 1967 at Airport Raceway near Saint John (NB). The oval operated for a few years in the late 60s, early 70s before closing.


1950 on Daytona Beach (FL)...It's Lloyd Moore rounding the south turn on the beach road course; Moore was driving a '49 Lincoln owned by Julian Buesink, and finished third in the race behind winner Harold Kite and second-place Red Byron. This edition of Flashback Friday is dedicated to the memory of Frank (Frankie) Moore from Saint John (NB). This photo was taken at Hammond River in the early 70s. An avid supporter of Maritime motorsports for over 40 years, Mr. Moore passed away August 15. Thanks to Ken MacIsaac for the picture.


It's 1991, at what is now Miramichi Speedway in Miramichi City, New Brunswick. It's the second annual Brunswick 100 with Tim Rodgers in Victory Lane. Rodgers now fields the No. 19 pro stock entry...The track was McKay's Speedway at the time, ownewd by the late Clarence Patles and Wilfred McKay. Last week we featured Jr. Hanley's No. 10 racer from 1970; this week we've got Hanley just two years later with the No. 72 he became best known for. This picture is from 1972, the year Hanley changed his number when he moved from Nova Scotia to Ontario.


1970...It's Jr. Hanley at Halifax Dartmouth International Speedway. Hanley, a native of Port Mouton, left Nova Scotia in 1972 to pursue a full-time career in Ontario building and racing stock cars, becoming a North American short track racing legend. Hanley still lives in Ontario, but hasn't raced for a couple of years.


It's the early 70s and it's none other than Frank Fraser (center) with Jim Davie (left) and longtime crew member Mike Pelrine (right). The car is a '69 Dart Fraser bought after it was pulled from the LaHave River on Nova Scotia's south shore. Thanks to Mike Pelrine for the picture.


With the running of IWK 250 upon us, we thought a fitting Flashback for this week would be to remember the man who holds the record for the most wins in the 250 at Riverside, the late Scott Fraser. Scott won six consecutive 250's between 1993 and 1998. For more on Scott Fraser, click here.

Terry Clattenburg - 1970 at Halifax Dartmouth International Speedway. Clattenburg went on to become one of the top stock car racers in the Maritimes for the next two decades. The four-time MASCAR champion (1986, 1989, 1990 and 1991) retired from driving in 1996. Clattenburg still resides in his native Dartmouth and remains active in motorsports helping son Dean, who lives - and races - in North Carolina.

Yarmouth Speedway, 1967 - Located on the Yarmouth Exhibition Grounds, this track was a 1/2-mile dirt oval from 1952 until 1965, then in 1966 a 1/3-mile paved oval was built inside the 1/2-mile; the track closed after the '69 season. The track was operated by Yarmouth Stock Car Racing Association.


1966 - Seabreeze Raceway. The 1954 Ford driven by 1966 Seabreeze Raceway track champion Ron Manuel. Danny Gould shared the wheel with Manuel that year...Seabreeze, a 1/4-mile oval, was located in Lawrencetown just outside Dartmouth, operating from 1966 to 1971. River Glade Speedway, 1966. River Glade Speedway was opened in 1964 by Ernie McLean; a bare bones 1/4-mile dirt oval. In 1965 they added grandstands, concessions, a tower and washrooms - and the track was paved. The McLean's operated the track for 30 years; since then it has new promoters who continue to offer weekly racing excitement to the Moncton area fans.

Atlantic Speedway, 1977 - John Howard and Jim Sewart lead the pack of late models to the green flag...Atlantic Speedway was a 1/2-mile paved oval located on the Lucasville Road in Hammonds Plains, NS, operating from 1970-1980. The site now houses Atlantic Playlant; part of the oval is still used in the go kart track...Ken MacIsaac photo.

McEwen's Speedway, 1967 - Adelard Cormier - one of the top drivers in the Maritimes during the 60s and 70s. McEwen's was a 1/4-mile dirt oval at Moncton Exhibition Park, operating from 1966 to 1970.


1953 at Wagner's Raceway in in the Annapolis Valley community of Granville Center (NS). Ralph Wagner ran an Irving Station in Granville Center and built this dirt track behind his garage. Ken MacIsaac, who contributed this photo, was fortunate to meet Ralph and his wife, and have them sign the photo, at the Scott Fraser Roast in Halifax in 2000.


1969 at Brookside Speedway. Jerry Campbell is in the 45, with Richard MacArthur in the 5. Campbell went on to be the driving force behind the now defunct Petty Raceway, and MacArthur remains involved as a sponsor on Shawn Tucker's car...Brookside Speedway was a 1/4-mile oval located in Nashwaaksis, New Brunswick on the north side of Fredericton; it closed in 1975...Thanks to Ken MacIsaac for the picture.


John Chisholm, 1976 at Riverside Speedway (newspaper clipping). Chisholm built Riverside Speedway in 1969 - and rebuilt it in 2006. He retired from driving several years ago but is still a familiar sight in the pit area with his son Donald Chisholm, who drives pro stock car No. 89 at select events in the Maritimes.



From the early 50s at Sackville Speedway...It's Clyde Hemeon (left), Jack Dowell (center), and Art Steeves (right) ready for the demolition derby - Clyde and Art's motorsports debut! They went on to become familiar faces in maritime motorsports, helping to build the regional sport that we enjoy today. Until three years ago, when he retired, Art was the flashy flagman for the CARQUEST Tour, and MASCAR before that. Sackville Speedway, near Halifax, NS, was a 1/5-mile dirt oval, on the site that was to become Sackville Downs, and now houses a shopping complex. Thanks to Ken MacIsaac for this photo.


1977 - The Brothers Sewart - Atlantic Speedway. Follow-up to this past Friday's Flashback feature...Caption reads: Jim and Greg Sewart can do nothing wrong and last Sunday July 24th was no exception with Greg getting the feature win. At this point it appears the pair are unbeatable. The Sewarts are shows above in a familiar position, one behind the other. Greg (99) races a Chevelle and brother Jim (96) is in a Camaro, sponsored by Samco Services of Sackville.


From the 1977 Atlantic Speedway souvenir program...Greg Sewart joined the MASCAR ranks soon thereafter and went on to become the series only five-time champion, earning the titles in 1983, 1987, 1992, 1993 and 1995. Sewart retired from driving his familiar No. 99 just a few years ago. Thanks to Pat Lawrence for the picture...

Door-handle-to-door-handle action at Danny's Speed Bowl in the early 80's. Located in Bathurst, New Brunswick, Danny's 1/4-mile paved oval provided racing entertainment from 1968 to 1984. Thanks to Ken MacIsaac for the picture.


Scott Livingston - Raceway Park, PEI - 1985. Racing on PEI's famous red clay was the order for the first two years of Raceway Park's existence (1984-85). The track was paved for the '86 season; a plan was recently announced to see the track repaved this year. Scott Livingston is familiar not only to PEI fans but also to veteran MASCAR/pro stock fans, having raced his familiar No. 24 on a limited basis in those divisions since the 90s. 1976...New Glasgow's Bobby Allen, one of the top drivers of the era -as featured in the Atlantic Speedway program. Bobby's No. 66 was a familiar sight in Victory Lane "back in the day." Twenty-two-year old Rollie MacDonald gets a win in 1967 at Havre Boucher Speedway. Maritime motorsports historian Ken MacIsaac has put together a special feature covering the highlights of the first two decades of Pictou's Rollie MacDonald - a member of the Canadian Motorpsorts Hall of Fame, the 2005 CARQUEST Pro Stock Tour champ and without question a Maritime motorsports hero. August 9, 1981 - Riverside Speedway: The pace lap for a special 100-lap event, the second-leg of a double-header weekend shared between Riverside Speedway and River Glade Speedway (Petitcodiac, NB).


August 7, 1981 at River Glade Speedway. A stellar field was on hand for a late model special including Bobby Yuille (33) and Junior Hanley (72). This picture was taken during the afternoon practice session. The event was the first leg of a double-header weekend that saw the racing move to Riverside Speedway two days later.


July 30, 1969 - Yarmouth Speedway Racing News. Caption reads: NIP'N'TUCK - Gary Whittaker (No. 180) in his Vic Doucette - John's Auto Body sponsored Chev. and Carman Christie in his Oland Brewery backed Chev. drive into the second turn. Gary won the 25-lap feature event on July 19.


May 30, 1988 (The Chronicle Herald) - The caption reads: Junior Kelly of Lower Sackville leads Shubenacadie's Frank Fraser and Halifax's Greg Sewart into a turn during MASCAR stock car racing action Saturday night at the brand new Scotia Speedworld near Halifax. July 5, 1969 - The New Glasgow Evening News. The caption reads: Rollie MacDonald of Pictou was the all around winner at Riverside Speedway in James River last Sunday night when he captured first place in all three modified division races. Rollie started at the back of the pack in all the events, and wormed his way through the pack to gain the lead and hold it throughout the events. Starter Ron Mullins of Halifax presented MacDonald with the checkered flag after each event. Many thanks to Riverside Speedway for this "Flash Back" photo.
