The inaugural CARQUEST Pro Stock Tour champ, Wayne Smith, picked up the win in the first race on the 07 series schedule. Lots more pix at the end of this page...

    Smith Charges To Win

HALIFAX, NS (May 26, 2007) - Wayne Smith won the LUCAS OIL 100 for the CARQUEST Pro Stock Tour at Scotia Speedworld. Smith (Timberlea), took the lead early and held off a late race charge from Shawn Tucker (Fredericton, NB) to win the first race of the season for the series. Mike MacKenzie (Dartmouth) finished third; Shawn Turple (Enfield) and Lonnie Sommerville (Saint John, NB) rounded out the top five.

Smith won both the Fast Track RV Sales Halfway award and the Most Laps Led Award, leading 92 of the 100 feature race laps. Eight cautions slowed the event which took 1 hour and ten minutes to complete.

Rollie MacDonald (Pictou), Tucker and Turple won qualifying heat races. Daryl Mahar (Hubley) won the Urquhart MacDonald Associates B-Feature. Kent Vincent (Crapaud, PE) won the Dash for the Pole, featuring the top nine finishers in the Atlantic Tiltload Time Trials. John Flemming (Halifax) had the fastest time on the 3/10 mile oval, at an average speed of over 74 miles per hour when he lapped the track in 14.527-seconds. None of the top five cars opted to take the Dartmouth Metals Pole Challenge.

Lonnie Sommerville was the EIT race Radio Rookie of the Race.

Lap leaders included Vincent who started on the pole but saw Flemming lead lap one, Vincent retook the lead on lap two and then was passed by Smith on lap eight - the final lead change of the race.

Flemming was challenging Smith for the point on lap 15 when the two made a daring split around a lapped car on the front stretch; they got together in turn one - Smith continued and retained the top spot while Flemming spun and went to the rear of the pack. The three-time champ was making his way to the front when another altercation happened just ahead of him on lap 52 - this time the 97 car needed repairs and was in the pits for several laps.

Frank Fraser (Shubenacadie) made his return to the driver's seat, receiving a warm welcome from the fans, after dealing with brake and carburetor issues during the afternoon practice session. Fraser finished second in the B Feature, started 20th in the feature, spun to avoid two wrecks, and worked his way back to 11th when a part came off the car on lap 24. A couple laps later Fraser parked the car after developing fuel issues. "We were having fun," said Fraser, "that's what it's all about."

Besides the pro stocks, the event also saw racing for the C&R Auto Supply Sportsman and the Legends Tour. Leonard Boutilier and Harry Ross White won Sportsman heat races; Boutilier won the feature, followed by Craig Slaunwhite and White. Scott Maclean won the Legends heat race; Ed Hayden, Jeff Bennett and Cy Harvey were the top three finishers in the feature.

Harvey was doing double-duty Saturday at Speedworld, also bringing his pro stock racecar, but was among the non-qualifiers for the feature race. Other drivers that did not make the starting grid for the Lucas Oil 100 included Wayne Chase, Sandy Livingston, Dean MacInnis, Robbie MacLean, Roger Crane, Tim Rogers and Jim Tingley (driving for Gary Bursey).

The next stop on the CARQUEST Pro Stock Tour is on June 9 at Riverside Speedway for the Pioneer Coal 100.

    • Race Day Weather Update...Noon It's a whopping 26 degrees and sunny; forecast now says clear for tonight...A great night for racing! 8 a.m. The fog is clearing and the sun just poked its head through the clouds - looking good!!! No further updates unless warranted, i.e. no news is good news...6:30 a.m. It's a foggy 9 degrees to start the morning. The forecast says the temp will rise to the high teens/low 20s with a 40% chance of showers this afternoon/evening - in our books a 60% chance it will be fine...
    • Anyone who saw the race ad in Thursday's Halifax Herald may be a tad confused with the date indicated...Rest assured the race is scheduled for Saturday May 26 NOT Sunday May 27 as advertised. Look for a correction in Friday's paper...
    • Testing went well Wednesday for the Fraser camp...Both Shawn Turple and Frank Fraser had their cars out readying for Saturday's season opener...
    • A good source tells us Bobby White is expected to race this Saturday - and like many others - plans to run the first few shows and then go from there...Many veteran Maritime fans will remember White as a regional favourite in the 90s...
