    Emotional Win for Smith

    This One's for Cathy

Wayne Smith has earned his reputation on the race track as a vigorous competitor, but fans at the Lucas Oil 100 saw a softer side of the Oval Outlaw Saturday night after he captured the checkered flag. The emotion of losing his friend Cathy Ledwidge, a longtime race official, overwhelmed the driver in Victory Lane as he dedicated his win to Cathy.

"This one's for Cathy," was all he could manage, with his emotion saying the rest. Cathy Ledwidge, who worked with the CARQUEST Pro Stock Tour since its inception in 2001, passed away Thursday after a short battle with cancer. Smith and his brother Russell, carried a special tribute on their racecars (pictured right) for their lost friend. A moments silence was observed in Cathy's memory before the race started and all the racecars carried a special memorial decal. Her husband Ernie and son Mike also work with the series.

The win was hard fought for Smith, beating second-place Shawn Turple and third-place Kent Vincent to the finish line after dueling with both of them for the lead throughout the race. Shawn Tucker and Donald Chisholm rounded out the top five.

But even before Smith got to the green flag for a heat race, he had to overcome mechanical troubles during the afternoon practice session when the rear-end broke in his racecar. Four other raceteams, those of Shawn Tucker, Brad Mann, Stacey Clements and Daryl Mahar, rallied to provide parts and labour to keep Smith in the race - literally.

"We had no idea what we had," said Smith, "but we're lucky we practice a lot here."

Smith started eighth on the grid for the Lucas Oil 100, and working the outside groove steadily progressed to the front, sitting second by lap 30. On lap 33 he took the point from Turple but the pass didn't count when a caution flag flew before the lap was complete.

The subsequent restart saw Turple and Smith battle side-by-side for two laps before Smith completed the pass on lap 34. Kent Vincent challenged Smith before the midway point, leading laps 47 to 51, then Smith took over on lap 51 again - holding on for the win.

Mike MacKenzie looked strong in the early stages of the race, leading laps two and three, but was forced to park his racecar when a strap that holds the fuel cell in place came loose.

7/7/7 was lucky number three for Smith, with this win being his third of the series five races run this year. He's also got a second-place finish to his credit, and is fighting to have another second-place finish reinstated after a disqualification in round two on the season in which series officials contend Smith's carburetor was not up to series spec - and Smith contends the series testing tools are not up to industry spec.

The Lucas Oil 100 was slowed by seven caution periods and took just over one hour to complete.

Turple won the time trials and the qualifying Dash. Darren Vanderaa, Daryl Mahar and John Flemming won the qualifying heat races. Frank Fraser won the B Feature. Thirty teams entered the race, 29 attempted to qualify; Cape Breton's Dean MacInnis was unable to compete after his car developed engine problems during practice.

Support class action featured the hobby stocks and Legends.

Legends heat race winners were Gary Bursey and Justin MacNeill. Cy Harvey won the Legends feature race, followed by MacNeill and Ray Cox Jr.

Al Johnston won his first hobby stock race, twice, winning a heat race and the feature, followed by Kyle Butler and Mike Alexander.

With five of 10 races complete on the 07 schedule, the CARQUEST Pro Stock Tour now takes a mid-season break, returning to action July 28 at New Brunswick International Speedway.

    Preview: The Lucas Oil 100
Posted July 4/07; Source: CARQUEST Pro Stock Tour

The championship point standings were shuffled a bit after last Saturday’s Parts For Trucks 100 at Raceway Park in Oyster Bed Bridge. Shawn Turple of Enfield, NS, in the Municipal Group Monte Carlo, moved into first place in the standings ahead of Shawn Tucker of Fredericton, NB and Chris Hughes of Winsloe, PE. Lonnie Sommerville of Saint John, NB dropped to fourth while Bobby White of Kennetcook, NS moved to fifth place with his win last Saturday night. Kent Vincent of Crapaud, PE sits between White and the fast charging Wayne Smith of Timberlea, NS who is in seventh place, 63 back of Turple.

All this juggling of position means that drivers will be looking to gain back points lost, while those who made gains, will look to extend the point spread. This means that the drivers will covet every position in the heat and feature races. This will translate to great racing for the fans come Saturday night.

Sommerville still commands a sizeable lead in the EIT Race Radios Rookie of the Year point’s race. He is followed by Darren MacKinnon of Winsloe, PE, Jonathan Hicken of Brudenell, PE and Gary Bursey of Moncton, NB respectively.

Grandstands open at 3 PM, with Atlantic Tiltload Time Trials set for 5.10 PM. Racing Starts at 6 PM. The starting lineup will be decided by the Dash for Cash for the fastest cars from the Atlantic Tiltload Time Trials and the heat races. The Urquhart MacDonald Associates B feature will be the last chance for cars to qualify for the Lucas Oil 100.

Admission is $22.00 for adults, $5.00 for youth eight to 15 years, while those seven and under are admitted free of charge. All children under 12 years must be accompanied by an adult. Access to the Pits is $25.00 and is restricted to those 16 years and older.

Advance tickets are available at CARQUEST Auto Parts in Halifax & Burnside, Parts For Trucks in Burnside, Forbes Chev Olds in Dartmouth and Rocky Lake Quarry in Bedford. Tickets will be available at the track on race night starting at 3 PM.
