Preview: The CARQUEST Auto Parts 100
Posted July 26/07; Source: CARQUEST Pro Stock Tour
Saturday, July 28 is the running of the CARQUEST Auto Parts 100 at New Brunswick International Speedway and the
CARQUEST Pro Stock Tour teams are ready to resume their 10-race season, after a rare two-week break. In fact, they are like kids at Christmas, bursting with enthusiasm to get back racing.
Shawn Turple of Enfield, NS takes a small 29-point lead over Fredericton native and 2004 champion, Shawn Tucker. Chris Hughes of Winsloe, PE rounds out the top three for a true Maritime flavour. No matter where you are from in the Maritimes. You have a driver from your hometown province fighting it out for the 2007 championship.
Lonnie Sommerville of Saint John, NB who is a long time competitor at the oval in the Geay woods, will challenge Tucker’s hometown favourite status. Sommerville sits in fourth spot and is the leader in the EIT Race Radios Rookie of the Year standings. Wayne Smith of Timerlea, NS, the 2001 champion, completes the top five in championship point’s standings. Smith, took the win by mere inches over Turple on June 16th, in the Tour’s last visit to NBIS. The same close racing is expected on Saturday night.
One driver not to be overlooked is Brad Mann of Glen Livet, NB. Mann has years of experience at NBIS and knows his way around the track. He must be considered a treat to win. Another driver, who fly’s under the radar most times, but always finishes strong, is Kent Vincent of Crapaud, PE. Vincent finished fourth in June and currently sits sixth in point’s standings.
Darren MacKinnon of Winsloe, PE and Gary Bursey of Moncton, NB are chasing Sommerville in the EIT Race Radio Rookie of the Year race. MacKinnon and Bursey sit second and third respectively.
The Atlantic Tiltload Time Trials are set for 5:10 pm, with full racing scheduled for 6 pm. The Rockico Truck & Trailer pole challenge is in effect Saturday night, offering five of the top drivers a financial and point incentive to start in the feature in the 24th position.
The Urquhart MacDonald Associates B feature is expected to complete the starting grid for the CARQUEST Auto Parts 100. Mike Stevens of Riverside, NB sits atop the Urquhart MacDonald Associates B Feature standings. Bursey and MacKinnon round out the top three positions.
