    First things first.

I know I missed a great event at the new Riverside Speedway last weekend. I don't need to be reminded of that fact again. Thanks to all those of you who have.

Why was I unable to make it to Riverside for the grand re-opening? Well, thanks to Bernard Lord, New Brunswick is now knee-deep in a provincial election campaign... and as much as I love the race track, I love my day job at CTV News even more.

The rebirth of Riverside was, no doubt, a benchmark moment in Maritime stock car racing history. Well, the performance Wayne Smith put on at the Centre for Speed on Saturday night may be another. Sitting sixth on the starting grid, Smith, as he's done on other occasions this season, accepted the Pole Challenge. Because it was cool and because he was in an outside groove position, Smith figured it was worth the gamble. It was a huge gamble, but one that paid off. Click here for the rest of the story.

Mike MacKenzie was second and John Flemming was third. Shawn Tucker and Brad Mann rounded out the top five.

The race saw 11 cautions and took approx. one hour 40 minutes to run.

29 cars entered, 28 cars started the feature.

SHEDIAC, NB (August 26, 2006) - Wayne Smith of Halifax, NS won the CARQUEST 100 in spectacular fashion at the Centre for Speed Saturday night. The inaugural CARQUEST Pro Stock Tour champion started the race from the 25th position after qualifying in the top 10 and electing to take the MacDonald Pontiac Pole Challenge.

Smith took the lead well before the halfway mark, collecting the Atlantic Tiltload Most Laps led award, as well as the Fast Track RV Sales halfway award. Mike MacKenzie of Dartmouth, NS was second, ahead of points leader John Flemming of Halifax, NS.

Smith’s win was his first of the season. He becomes the eighth winner of the season in nine events.

Greg Proude and Dale Holmes, both of Charlottetown, PE took home heat wins. Gordie Ryan of Wellington, NS won the Motor Mart Dash for the Pole, featuring the top 10 finishers in Time Trials. Twenty-nine of the Maritime’s top drivers attempted to qualify for the CARQUEST 100 on the 3/8 mile track.
