Turple Wins First Race at Riverside Speedway

JAMES RIVER, NS (August 19, 2006) - Shawn Turple finally got the monkey off his back and drove his No. 0 Atlantic CAT car to a familiar place in Victory Lane in Saturday's Antigonish Mall 200 at the revitalized Riverside Speedway. The win was Turple's first on the CARQUEST Pro Stock Tour, coming in his sophomore year - on the heels of winning the series Rookie of Year Award in 05. The win was a welcome relief for Turple (Enfield, NS) after a series of wrecks in recent races, and the first for the Atlantic CAT team since the car won in September 2003 - driven by it's builder, the late Scott Fraser.

"This couldn't have come at a better place," said both crew chief Curtis Lindsay and car owner Frank Fraser. Scott Fraser ruled Riverside Speedway in the decade before he died in a March 2004 snowmobile accident. Frank Fraser (Scott's father) put Turple in the car mid-summer 2004 in an effort to help a young driver the way so many had helped Scott in his racing career. Click here for the rest of the story.

Advance Ticket Sales Top 3000 for Riverside Re-Opening - Tickets Still Available

JAMES RIVER, NS (August 18, 2006) - Riverside Speedway management have announced brisk advance ticket sales for Saturday's re-opening of the rebuilt race track. As of early today, advance ticket sales have topped a whopping 3,000.

In spite of rumours to the contrary, track management want everyone to know they are NOT sold out. They've got seating for 6,000 installed and standing room for another 500 to 600. They are advising you go early if you don't already have your ticket. Some advance ticket locations are sold out, so if you plan to get tickets at one of those locations today or tomorrow, you should call first to make sure they still have some left.

Entry List for The Antigonish Mall 200

HALIFAX, NS (August 15, 2006) – Thirty teams have ordered tires for the Antigonish Mall 200, to be held at the “new” Riverside Speedway this Saturday, August 19. Click here for the entry list.

No 'View From The Tower' This Week
Due to a work commitment, Andy won't make it to Riverside so there will be no 'View From the Tower' this week - sorry... Believe me, he's more upset than you are!!! CheckersToWreckers.com will be there; we'll have lots and lots of coverage, with pictures, too.

CARQUEST Tour Rolls Into Rebuilt Riverside Speedway This Weekend
    Source: CARQUEST Pro Stock Tour

JAMES RIVER, NS (August 14, 2006) – The CARQUEST Pro Stock Tour rolls into Riverside Speedway this weekend - as it has many times before - but this time with an excitement level that exceeds any prior Tour event. This visit will see the inaugural race on the rebuilt Riverside Speedway.

The Antigonish Mall 200 will be run on Saturday, August 19 at the James River track, which is essentially a brand new facility. The only thing remaining from the original facility is the layout of the track and the flag stand.

John Flemming (Halifax) is the current Tour points leader. Brad Mann (Glen Livet NB), Gordie Ryan (Wellington), Wayne Smith (Timberlea) and Shawn Tucker (Fredericton NB) round out the top five.

If local knowledge means anything, Rollie MacDonald (Pictou), Donald Chisholm (Antigonish) and George Koszkulics (New Glasgow), must be considered among those who are capable of winning on Saturday night. The new asphalt may change the tracks characteristics enough to make it just as friendly to a driver with less experience at the track.

This may help Kent Vincent (Crapaud PE), Dan MacKay (Halifax), Greg Proude (North Wiltshire PE), Shawn Turple (Enfield) and Kris Fournier (Charlottetown PE), who are currently sixth to tenth in points.

The CARQUEST drivers will be racing for their share of the $22,500 purse, with $3,200 going to the winner. The Motor Mart Dash for Cash is up for grabs, as is the Fast Track RV Sales Half-Way Award, the Atlantic Tiltload Hard Charger and Most Lap Led awards, the Urquhart MacDonald Associates B Feature award and the Northumberland Pontiac Buick GMC Pole Challenge.

Russell Smith (Lakeside), Bobby Nielsen (Vernon River PE), Mike Stevens (Riverview NB), Sandy Livingston (Springhill)and Roger Crane (Montague PE), are all in the hunt for the EIT Race Radio Rookie of the Race award and ultimately the prestige of being the EIT Race Radio Rookie of the Year.

Time Trials start at 5:10 PM, with racing starting at 6 PM.

Riverside Speedway is located at exit 30, Highway 104, east of Antigonish.

    Antigonish Mall 200 Notes

Tuesday, August 15: Since it's a big part of the race strategy, we're trying to learn the format that will be applied to the 200-lap feature, i.e. straight 200 laps, twin 100's, restart lineups if there is a break, entry list, etc...We've made these inquiries to CARQUEST Tour manager Ken Cunning and so far, the answers are...
  • "The 200 this weekend will include a gas stop. We haven't determined when that will happen yet, but it won't be a specific lap. It will be between lap X and lap Y." (Not sure what laps x and y are, but if we find out we'll let you know...)
  • "They will be lined up as they where, when the caution flag flew."
