Jeremie, Bill Whorff Top Two in TD Banknorth 250

OXFORD, Maine (July 30, 2006) – Jeremie Whorff, a 22-year-old driver with only five previous Pro Stock weekly feature victories to his credit in a four-year racing career, became one of the unlikeliest winners of the TD Banknorth 250 in the 33rd annual short track showcase Sunday night at Oxford Plains Speedway.

click here for more photos Whorff won his heat and dominated the second half of the event, leading 116 of the final 119 laps. He took over the top spot for good when the NASCAR Nextel Cup star Kyle Busch's car expired as he crossed the stripe to complete lap 158. Click here for the rest of the story.

TD Banknorth 250 Race Day Report
Monday July 31 at 12:18 a.m. AT - It's over...The father and son duo of Jeremie Whorf and Bill Whorf Jr. were first and second, Sam Sessions was third...Young Jeremie (22) had never even qualified for the 250 before, in three previous tries...This year he not only qualified but dominated - and collected $36,600 for doing so...Scott Alexander was indeed the only Maritime racer in the field; he was one of just 19 cars (of 40 starters) that finished the race...We'll have to wait til later to get his exact finishing spot...According to the report we got, it was a long race with somewhere around 11 caution flags, one red flag and "lots" of wrecked cars...Here's a quick top 10...More details to follow later in the day...
    1. #00 Jeremie Whorff
    2. #0 Bill Whorff Jr.
    3. #0x Sam Sessions
    4. #84 Scott Mulkern (last car on lead lap)
    5. #17t Travis Benjamin
    6. #41 Trevor Sanborn
    7. #29 Dave Dion
    8. #75 Gary Smith
    9. #47 Corey Williams
    10. #7 Curtis Gerry

Sunday July 30 at 7:30 p.m. AT - Scott Alexander made the big show, but the cell phone message was breaking up so badly have no idea where he starts...In spite of being one of the fastest cars in practice all weekend long, Rollie MacDonald bolted on new tires for the qualifying races - and was terrible - and didn't make the show...Don't think Flemming or Wiggins did either, but not 100% sure - like I said, the cell phone was breaking up... PS: Mike MacKenzie's No. 02 racecar did not go to Oxford...

Sunday July 30 at 2:15 p.m. AT - Practice is over, draws are done. Qualifying races start in 45 minutes. Scott Alexander and Rollie MacDonald are both fast; Scott will start 12th in the fifth heat race - not sure yet about Rollie's heat race starting spot. John Flemming has been struggling to get a handle on the racecar setup - not sure where he will start either...There are 90 cars attempting to make the 37-car starting grid for the 250...Yikes! Think there will be any fender rubbing this afternoon??? Green flag for the 250 is scheduled for 6:30 local time, 7:30 Atlantic time. More later...

    TD Banknorth 250 Saturday Report
Posted Sunday July 30 for Saturday July 29, 2006 - Check out the updated entry list; this one reflects the cars actually in the pits or that have filed official entry forms...Saturday was a long, hot day with no major problems for any of 75+ cars on hand. Unofficial times shows Patrick Laperle (Quebec), Cassius Clark and Ben Rowe fastest then a whole bunch, including the "Home Boys" in a real tight pack. Not a lot of attention paid to fast, though, at the 250 - the only two times you want/need to be the best are at the end of lap 250 - and at the draw for start positions in the heat races...A good draw can make your day, even if don't have the fastest car - and a bad draw can ruin your day even if have the fastest car. The trick is to get in the starting field, then then show your stuff - and cross your fingers you can stay out of trouble...

So today is the big day...the pits open at 6 a.m., the first pro stock practice is from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. (all times local, ET), second at 9:40 until 10:40, and final practice from 11:20 until 12:20. The big draw for heat race starting spots comes at the drivers meeting that starts at 12:30. Then racing starts at 2 p.m. with six heats, 20 laps each, the top four transfer to the 250. Yikes! Those that don't make it to the top four, go to the three 20-lap consi's, where just the top three transfer, then anyone that hasn't made it yet gets to run the 50-lap last chance race, where only the winner transfers...

Hope to be able to do a mid-day update, so stay tuned...

    TD Banknorth 250 Friday Report
Posted Saturday July 29 for Friday, July 28, 2006 - All the "Home Boys" had a good day Friday, in spite of the sweltering heat - typical of the 250 at Oxford... It was 97 degrees with high, high humidity...Scott Alexander, Rollie MacDonald and John Flemming were there, along with Brent Wiggins from Fredericton. The day ended with a torrential downpour - raining so hard tires were floating in the puddles...No mention of Mike MacKenzie, so not sure whether he changed his plans, or not...Got some pictures, too...Check them out in the 250 photo gallery - click here.

The pits open Saturday morning at 8, starting another long day for the teams. Pro Stocks get three practice sessions: 9 to Noon; 1:30 to 2:30 and 3:40 to 4:20 (all times local, ET). Should have a report later today - so stay tuned...

PS: Many, many thanks to Corrina Alexander (Scott's wife) for keeping us updated - and for sending the pictures!
