Kahne Conquers Coca-Cola 600
CHARLOTTE, N. C. (May 28, 2006) -- Kasey Kahne took the high road Sunday night when most of his competitors ran the
low road and won the Coca-Cola 600 at Lowe's Motor Speedway.
Kahne, one of NASCAR's most popular young drivers, ran the high groove of the newly-paved speedway most of the gruelling 400-lap distance while many of his adversaries fell victim to a slick track surface that put quite a few cars in the garage early on.

Pre-Race Notes & Quotes
Terry Labonte, No. 44 CARQUEST Chevrolet
Terry Labonte will drive a No. 44 CARQUEST Chevrolet on Sunday in his final 600-mile race at Lowe's Motor Speedway. The
event -- his 55th start at the 1.5-mile track -- marks the third of 10 events Labonte is running for Hendrick Motorsports in
his final NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series season. Labonte has logged more than 17,000 laps at Lowe's Motor Speedway, where he
won the 1996 UAW-GM Quality 500 en route to his second NEXTEL Cup championship. The Corpus Christi, Texas, native also
posted victories in the 1988 and 1999 NASCAR NEXTEL All-Star Challenge at the Concord, N.C., track. He will make his final
start there on Oct. 14. Labonte made his first Lowe's Motor Speedway start on Oct. 8, 1978. He qualified 16th, finished 24th
and took home $2,475 after engine problems sidelined the effort.
Scott Riggs No. 10 Valvoline/Stanley Tools Dodge
“We had a good test in Kentucky Speedway this week and I think we learned some things that will even translate to
racing at Lowe’s this weekend. Winning the Open last weekend was definitely a credit to all these guys on the
Valvoline/Stanley Tools Dodge, but getting caught a lap down in the All-Star race kept us from being able to
show our hand. Now everybody is anxious to prove ourselves all over again. It’s also pretty cool that we get to run the
“Cars” paint scheme this weekend. My son Layne (turns four years old in June) and I have really been looking forward to
watching the premiere on Friday at the track.” Scott Riggs will drive the “Cars” paint scheme this weekend to celebrate the
Disney Pixar movie’s premiere at Lowe’s Motor Speedway Friday night. The Valvoline/Stanley Tools Dodge will carry the characters
of Lightning McQueen and The King on the hood and quarter panels
Kasey Kahne, No. 9 Wisk/Ultimate Chargers Dodge
"The Ultimate Chargers Dodge has a little different look to it this weekend with Wisk on the hood. It’s their first
race on the car this season and we want to give them a good finish. I am a lot more comfortable on this new track
surface and with the new tire after racing in the All-Star Challenge last Saturday. Hopefully that will be an advantage
when we get on the track with the Wisk Dodge this weekend.” Sunday’s race marks Kahne’s fifth start at Lowe’s Motor Speedway.
He has led in all four races at LMS with his best finish of 12th coming in the Coca-Cola 600 in 2004. After starting second
in the fall race in 2004, Kahne led 207 laps of the first 267 laps and looked to be on his way to his first career victory
when a blown tire send Chassis # 55 (which Kahne stills refers to as his all-time favorite car) into the outside retaining
wall coming out of turn two. The car was damaged beyond repair. Kahne started fourth in last year’s Coca-Cola 600 and
finished 26th. In the fall race last year, he started 33rd and finished 23rd.
Jeremy Mayfield, No. 19 Dodge Dealers/UAW Dodge
“The No. 19 Dodge Dealers/UAW Dodge Charger we had for the all-star race was probably the best car I’ve had all year.
Unfortunately, we got caught up in an accident, but it gives us confidence going back for the 600. The 600 is a
totally different race. The all-star race was a Saturday night feature, a page from short-track racing. This is a
marathon. We start in the afternoon and end at night. In the past, the big deal was the changing track conditions
from day to night. Now, it’s the new surface, the hard tire compound and a smaller fuel cell. Teams will be doing a
lot of adjusting. Some with be able to maintain a setup that works and keeps the car under control. Others won’t. The
key will be to keep our Dodge Charger on the track and in contention for the final 100 miles. That’s the position we
want to put ourselves in.” Sunday’s race will be Mayfield’s 25th start at Lowe’s Motor Speedway. He has two top-five and six top-10 finishes at
LMS. His best finish in the 600 came last year when he finished fourth after starting 36th. His best finish at the 1.5-mile
facility came in the fall race in 2000 when he started 10th and finished second. Mayfield’s best start at LMS was third in
the fall race in 1996.
Dave Blaney, No. 22 Caterpillar Chevrolet
The Caterpillar #22 car will sport a special paint scheme for the Coca-Cola 600 this weekend. It will feature the new
Caterpillar E-Series Backhoe Loaders. Three models from the Backhoe Loader Line have been updated, including the
416E, 420E and 430E. The newly styled Cat 416E Backhoe Loader has been worked into the design of Bill Davis's #22 car
for the Sunday night race. Blaney has made 12 starts on the 1.5-mile Concord, N.C. track, starting as high as 8th (2003) and
posting a top-10 in 2002. Blaney fared even better during his Busch Series days earning the pole position
twice (1998 and 2000) and starting inside the top-10 five times. Blaney is scheduled to make his debut for Braun Racing
in the Busch Series this weekend driving the No. 32 machine in Saturday evening’s event.
Jeff Gordon, No. 24 DuPont Chevrolet
“This weekend’s race will be exciting and it’s going to be a survival race,” said Gordon, driver of the No. 24 DuPont Chevrolet.
“These tires are so finicky. I’m sure they’ll be a handful when the race begins. “We're actually going to be running two
different races. We'll probably start with a little bit different spring package than we used to finish third in the All-Star race.
We may do something with spring rubbers to allow us to adjust to the changing track conditions. “The second race begins when the
sun goes down and the track cools. You need to anticipate the changing conditions and stay ahead of them.” In 13 career starts
in this event, Gordon has posted three wins including his first NASCAR Cup Series victory in 1994, five poles which occurred
consecutively from 1994 - 1998, six top-five’s, eight top-10's and he has led at least one lap in 10 of those events. Overall,
he has four wins, seven poles (the most of any active driver), 13 top-fives and 15 top-10's in 26 career starts at the North
Carolina track.
Tony Stewart, No. 20 Home Depot Chevrolet
Will NASCAR's mandate of smaller fuel cells (14 gallons) for this weekend's race change your team's pit strategy? "Yeah, it's
going to seem like the race will never end because even if you do get a green-flag run, it's going to be half as long or less
than what it used to be when we were running with a 22-gallon tank. It's just one of those deals where the pit crews are going to
be worn out. They're definitely going to earn their money." How do you approach the last 100 miles of the Coca-Cola 600? "We
always work these races backward. You really don't pay attention to how many laps you've run. You pay attention to how many
laps you have left. You know how many laps are in a segment and you know that when it comes to that last segment that you better
have it right. And in the second to last segment, you better be working your way to the front so that you don't have to pass a
lot of cars in that last green flag segment. Everything that we do pretty much works from the end of the race backward, and
that's how we plan our strategy."
Stewart has led a total of 478 laps at Charlotte in point-paying races. And in the last 11 point-paying races at
Charlotte, Stewart has led 460 laps, second only to Jimmie Johnson with 860 laps led. Johnson has won five of the last
six point-paying races at Charlotte, including four straight. The lone driver to break his string of dominance?
Stewart in October 2003. In 14 career point-paying races at Charlotte, Stewart has six top-fives and nine top-10s. His best
finish is first, earned in October 2003 at the UAW-GM Quality 500. His worst finish is 40th, logged at the 2003 Coca-Cola 600.
Stewart has never recorded a DNF (Did Not Finish) in a point-paying race at Charlotte, the longest current streak among active drivers.
Clint Bowyer, No. 07 Jack Daniel’s Country Cocktails Chevrolet
What about the harder tire, smaller fuel call and all the added pit stops because of the smaller fuel cell? Does that put
any extra pressure on you, as a driver, to make sure you get in and out of the pits cleanly? “We’ll definitely have to practice
getting on and off pit road in practice and we’ll definitely have to be on our game when it comes to pitting. I definitely
think we have the hot rod to do it. The Jack Daniel’s Chevrolet showed a lot of promise during the test and there should be no
reason why we’re not as competitive when we get back for the race.”
How are you going to handle a 600-mile race? Clearly, it’s the longest race that you’ve ever participated in. Do you
look at the scoreboard while you’re out there and keep track of the laps? “You just go. Hopefully, we’ll have a good handling
race car, make good adjustments and keep up with it in the pits. That’s the thing about the 600 – you have to keep up with the
car. As the sun goes down, the car tends to get tighter as the track temperature cools off. You might have to sacrifice early to
be there at the end.”
Bowyer’s No. 07 Chevy will sport a Jack Daniel’s Country Cocktails paint scheme during this weekend’s Coca-Cola 600
festivities at LMS. Bowyer and company tested at Lowe’s Motor Speedway May 2-3 in preparation for last weekend’s All-Star
race and this week’s Coca-Cola 600. The 26-year-old driver recorded the fourth-fastest overall speed of the test,
lapping the 1.5-mile Concord, N.C., track in 29.365 seconds (183.892 mph).
Michael Waltrip, No. 55 Napa Dodge
NAPA AUTO PARTS driver Michael Waltrip will make his 22nd start in the Coca-Cola 600; Waltrip's best finish was
2nd (2004) and his worst 37th (1999). Waltrip's average starting position in 42 starts at Lowe's Motor Speedway is 19.404; his
average finish is 18.023. Waltrip made his series debut in the 1985 Coca-Cola 600. Other drivers to make their debuts in the
race include Dale Earnhardt, Sr. (1975), Dale Earnhardt, Jr. (1999), Elliott Sadler (1998), Jeremy Mayfield (1993), and Brett
Bodine (1986).
Dale Earnhardt Jr., No. 8 Budweiser Chevrolet
What are your thoughts leading into this weekend’s race at Charlotte? “It’s obvious we have a lot of work to do in a
short time. We really struggled in the All-Star race. Not sure why, but we fought the car the entire race. We tried a lot of
different things, and none of them seemed to work. It was frustrating. I know the guys at the shop are working to figure it
out. If there was a good thing about the All-Star race, it was that we know all the stuff – or a lot of the stuff – that doesn’t
work. We’ve definitely got to get faster just to run in the top-10.” Were the new hard compound tires the issue? “I’m not a
big fan of the tires, but it is what it is. Our issue is in the set-up. We know we’ve got a great car. It ran third at
Atlanta, led laps… it has a great body on it. We’ve just got to dig deeper and work at finding the right combination,
and I have to feed (crew chief) Tony (Eury) Jr. the best information. The practice sessions will be very important for us.
The tires definitely affect a lot of things, because you lose so much grip with the harder compound. But some teams
have figured out how to make it work, so that’s no excuse.” Dale Jr. made his Nextel Cup debut at Lowe’s Motor Speedway at the
Coca-Cola 600 in 1999. He qualified eighth and finished 16th. In 13 career starts at LMS, Dale Jr. has four top-5s and
six top-10s. He has led six times for 198 laps. Five of Dale Jr.’s 17 career victories have come at night, most recently
his win at Richmond two weeks ago. Dale Jr. has two top-10 finishes in the 600-mile race at Charlotte. Junior won his first
career Bud Pole Award at LMS in May 2000, less than one week after becoming the first rookie driver to win the NEXTEL
All-Star Challenge.
Kevin Harvick, No. 29 Reese's Caramel Cup Chevrolet
Kevin Harvick on Lowe's Motor Speedway and its hard tire: "The characteristics of the racetrack are still the same as
they used to be. Temperature affects the place a lot. Our strategy going into the All-Star race, we didn't practice at all
in race trim in the daytime just because we knew it was a nighttime race. We didn't want to give ourselves a chance to make
any adjustments on the car just because we wanted to go off for the night time test. For the 600 we'll probably go back to
our notes in the daytime and probably have some practice during the day. You just have to go off what you did in the test and
I think everything was relatively close in the All-Star race as far as being comparable."
Scott Wimmer, No. 4 Aero Exhaust Chevrolet
"Lowe's is a good place to go, it's near all the teams' headquarters and kind of the heart of racing there in Charlotte. I'm
excited to see all the fans out there. It's the longest race of the year, 400 laps, and it's going to be a big test of
equipment and engines. It should be an exciting race, it always is, with the new pavement and tires along with the fuel
cell changes. It's good to be around home for a change and not have to travel far. We have lots of friends and family that
come down for this race so we are looking forward to it. We have a brand new car that is capable of running real well."
Scott Wimmer will be attempting to qualify for his 92nd NASCAR Nextel Cup race on May 13, 2006 at Lowe's Motor Speedway. Wimmer
will be attempting to start in his fifth (5) NASCAR Nextel Cup event at Lowe's. His career-best start at the 1.5-mile oval
track is 14th (May 2005) and his best finish is 20th (May. 2005)
