I first started going to River Glade Speedway in the mid 70's, when I was just a kid. Every August, dad would take a week off from work and racing, and we'd head to Moncton to this race track that had the 'big' race. I'd never seen anything like it. There were so many cars. Fast cars…. sharp looking cars….. not so sharp looking cars…. you name it, it was there. I didn't know anything about rules back then, but it seemed like any class of stock car could enter the International. There were guys running street stock type machines, competing against Biederman's Howe chassis. It didn't matter. This was the International. If you had a stock car, and felt like you were 'running strong', then you entered it.
This race first introduced me to legends like Adelard Cormier and Caleb Dunn. They ran River Glade weekly, they knew the track, they won a ton of races there. The International would attract the outsiders, like Frank Fraser, Don Biederman and Hanley. Watching all these drivers compete against each other was pretty exciting for a kid (and adults too).
I've got a lot of great memories of this race over the years. Thanks to Ernie and Winona McLean for starting the International and to the folks at Petty International Raceway for keeping this event going.
